On January 5th, 2024, a significant Guest lecture was hosted in the Seminar Hall (E-101) of the Civil Engineering Department, drawing attention to the evolving landscape of sustainable concrete solutions. The lecture featured Soma Venkat and J Narendra from JSW Cement, who shared their expertise with an audience of eager III and V semester B.Tech Civil students.
The central theme of the lecture was “Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) for Strong, Durable, Sustainable & Green Concrete Construction.” As representatives of JSW Cement, a subsidiary of the JSW Group, Soma Venkat and J Narendra provided valuable insights into the company’s expansive role in the cement industry. Their presentation covered the diverse product range of JSW Cement, including key materials like Portland Slag Cement (PSC), Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), and particularly GGBS.
The lecture focused on the advantages of using GGBS, a sustainable alternative to traditional cement, in various construction projects. The guests highlighted JSW Cement’s commitment to eco-friendly practices and its initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and integrate green technology in its manufacturing processes.
In addition to the technical presentation, the lecture also featured an interactive quiz segment, where students actively participated and demonstrated their understanding of the subject. The top performers were duly recognized with awards, adding an element of engagement to the event.
The guest lecture concluded with a symbolic gesture towards sustainability – the planting of saplings near the concrete laboratory. This act reflected the overarching message of the lecture: the importance of embracing sustainable materials and practices in the field of civil engineering. The event not only provided technical knowledge but also inspired the upcoming generation of engineers to consider environmental impacts in their future endeavors
