National Service Scheme (NSS) s an Indian government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. The first education commission (1950) recommended the introduction of national service by students on a voluntary basis. NSS was launched during 1969, the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi, in 37 universities involving 40000 students. NSS is an extension dimension to the higher education system to orient the student youth to community service while they are studying in educational institutions.

Establishment of NSS – UNIT at MGIT

  • National Service Scheme of MGIT was inaugurated on 22-11-2002 by Dr V Malakonda Reddy (Former Chairman -CBES), Sri D Kamalakar Reddy (Former Secretary-CBES), Sri I Ramachandra Reddy (Former Principal-CBIT), Dr M Komaraiah (Former Principal-MGIT) along with Dr K Mukkanti (Former NSS Co-ordinator-JNTUH) as per the orders issued by JNTUH (JNTU/NSS/New units (SS-2)/2002 dated 20-11-2002 regarding the sanction of new units). A massive plantation program was taken up as an inaugural activity which was attended by many students and staff members.
  • Initially it was started on the self-financing basis and later funding from JNTU started from the month of October, 2003. NSS unit of MGIT organized number of programs so far to fulfill certain social obligations like, Blood Donation camps, Immunization camps, Health camps, Personality development programs, AIDS awareness programs, AIDS ralleys, Anti-ragging activities, Plantation programs, Assistance to conduct elections, various awareness programs, Charity activities by collecting funds, Vivekananda birth day celebrations and Rashtriya Ekta Diwas as directed by JNTUH or with proper initiation by the unit. A special camp of seven days is being organized every year taking up the activities like Clean & Green, cutting of bushes, Road making, Painting of speed breakers, awareness activities, Interaction with school children and villagers and medical camps at the adopted villages, Kokapet or Khanapur.
  • NSS unit of MGIT organized JNTU Youth Festival on 7th and 8th February 2003 in which various colleges affiliated to JNTU have participated (a University Youth Festival funded and organized outside of its Campus). NSS volunteers of MGIT participated in organizing India – Pakistan Cricket Match at Uppal Stadium, Hyderabad in connection with its inauguration.
  • Total strength of students sanctioned for the Unit is 100 and all the students are highly motivated, enthusiastic and come up with various proposals of conducting social activities beneficial to the society.

NSS Motto

  • The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is “NOT ME BUT YOU”. The goal of NSS is “Education through Community Service and Community Service through Education”.

NSS Symbol

  • The NSS symbol is based on the “Rath” wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Odisha. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind. The Red colour in the badge indicates that the NSS volunteers are full of blood i.e. lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit. The giant wheels of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and signify the movement in life across time and space.

  • The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for the continuity as well as change and implies on the part of the NSS for continuous striving for social transformation and upliftment. There are 24 wheels in ‘Rath’ of Sun temple of Konark. Each wheel has eight bars which represents 8 pahars of day.

NSS Badge

  • The NSS badge embossed NSS symbol. All the NSS volunteers wear it while undertaking various community programmes of community service.

NSS Day

  • Every year on September 24, India celebrates National Service Scheme Day (NSS Day).

NSS Song

  • During Silver Jubilee Year the NSS theme song has been composed. All NSS volunteers are expected to learn the theme song and sing the song during NSS.

Overall Objective of NSS 

  • Development of student’s personality through community service.
  • Specific Objectives
    • To kindle the student’s social consciousness.
    • To give them opportunities:
      • To work with and among people
      • To develop awareness and knowledge of social realities
      • To have concern for the wellbeing of the community, particularly of the weaker sections
      • To engage themselves in creative and constructive social work
      • To put their scholarship to practical use in mitigating at least some social problems and in promoting welfare.
      • To gain skills in the exercise of democratic leadership
      • To gain skills in the programme of development for self-involvement during leisure and vacation period of national development
      • To enrich personality

Duties of NSS volunteers 

  • Establish rapport with the people in the project area
  • Identify needs, problems and resources of the community.
  • Plan programs and carry out the plan.
  • Relate learning experience towards finding solutions to the problem identified.
  • Record the activities in the work diary systematically and assess the progress periodically and effect changes as and when needed.
