Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering | August 13, 2026

The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MME) witnessed an iconic moment on Thursday, 13 August 2026, with the visit of four distinguished alumni who returned to their alma mater for an engaging interaction with the department’s undergraduate students.

Distinguished Alumni

The visiting alumni included:

  • Dr. U. Raghu Nandan (Batch of 2007) — CTO and R&D Manager, M/s. Nanocaps, Norway
  • Dr. K. Madhava Reddy (Batch of 2007) — Associate Professor, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China
  • Dr. Sravan Kumar (Batch of 2007) — Senior Scientist, National Physical Laboratory, United Kingdom
  • Dr. Seshendra Karamchedu (Batch of 2008) — Product Manager, Freemelt AB, Sweden

Session Highlights

The alumni conducted an engaging session titled “From MME to the World,” during which they presented their current research and professional work, offering students valuable insights into the rapidly evolving field of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science. They emphasized that the modern world is increasingly dependent on advanced and strategic materials, highlighting the vital role played by metallurgical engineers and materials scientists in the progress of nations — particularly in the defence, power, and energy sectors.

The interactive session gave undergraduate students an excellent platform to openly discuss their concerns and uncertainties around career planning. The alumni addressed all questions, clarified doubts, and encouraged students to stay abreast of the latest developments and emerging trends in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Technology, underscoring the importance of building strong fundamentals as the key to a successful career.

Guidance on Higher Education Abroad

The alumni also elaborated on opportunities for pursuing higher education, particularly Master’s programmes, in countries such as China, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, and the United States. They advised undergraduates interested in studying abroad to first understand the thrust research areas offered by international universities before proceeding with their applications.

Student Response

Undergraduate students expressed immense enthusiasm and gratitude for the opportunity to interact with such accomplished alumni. They felt inspired, mentored, and strengthened by the interaction, conveying heartfelt appreciation to the alumni for taking time from their professional commitments to return to their alma mater, and thanking the Department for organizing the session.

A Rare and Memorable Occasion

The Department considers this gathering of distinguished alumni — and their interaction with current students — a rare and memorable occasion, reflecting the strong and enduring bond between the Department and its alumni community.

The visiting alumni assured the Department of their continued support, expressing willingness to contribute to its growth and development in every possible way.
