MGIT Conducts Five-Day FutureSkills Prime 2.0 Bootcamp on IoT with NIELIT Calicut

News Date : 26 Sep 2026     News Report

The Departments of Emerging Technologies and Information Technology, MGIT conducted a five-day FutureSkills Prime 2.0 Bootcamp on the Internet of Things (IoT) from 21 to 25 September 2026 at A-213, A Block, in collaboration with NIELIT Calicut, Kerala and in association with NIELIT Hyderabad. The programme was conducted under FutureSkills Prime, a digital skilling initiative of NASSCOM and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India.

The sessions were led by Mr. Rajesh M., Scientist E at NIELIT Calicut and Principal Investigator of the FutureSkills Prime 2.0 (IoT) project, along with Ms. Raiya Rajeevan C, Project Associate. Students of B.Tech III Semester, Information Technology and B.Tech VII Semester, CSE (Data Science) took part.

Approximately 70% of the programme was delivered as hands-on work. Participants moved from IoT fundamentals and hardware platforms on the first two days, through layered architecture, MQTT messaging and cloud integration, to MicroPython programming on ESP32 and Raspberry Pi Pico W kits, closing with a session on mobile application development for IoT. Every participant was issued NIELIT IoT Development Kits and Raspberry Pi Pico W boards for the duration of the training and built working sensor-to-cloud applications.

The bootcamp was offered free of charge under the FutureSkills Prime sponsorship. It concluded on 25 September with an assessment, a structured feedback exercise and the award of joint MGIT – NIELIT certificates.

Outcomes Achieved

  • Participants built end-to-end IoT prototypes covering sensor interfacing, MQTT messaging, cloud dashboards and MicroPython firmware.
  • Hands-on exposure to three hardware platforms: NIELIT IoT Development Kits, ESP32 and Raspberry Pi Pico W.
  • In the participant feedback, every parameter averaged above 4.4 out of 5; overall effectiveness scored 4.53, with 93% rating it 4 or 5.
  • The hands-on practical sessions, the resource persons and the course material were the highest-rated aspects, each at 4.58.
  • 54 of the 55 respondents said they would recommend the programme to their peers.
  • 47 respondents expressed interest in an advanced follow-up programme on IoT.
  • Joint MGIT – NIELIT certificates awarded to [NN] participants.

Course Outcomes

On completion of the bootcamp, the participant is able to:

  • CO1 — Explain the IoT ecosystem, layered architecture and the platforms commonly used to build IoT systems.
  • CO2 — Interface sensors and actuators with microcontroller platforms and acquire reliable data.
  • CO3 — Select an appropriate connectivity technology and communication protocol for a given IoT use case.
  • CO4 — Implement machine-to-machine communication using the MQTT publish–subscribe protocol.
  • CO5 — Integrate edge devices with cloud IoT platforms and visualise live sensor data on a dashboard.
  • CO6 — Develop embedded IoT applications in MicroPython on ESP32 and Raspberry Pi Pico W platforms.
  • CO7 — Prototype an end-to-end IoT solution, including integration with a mobile application for remote monitoring and control.
