One-Day Workshop on Quantum Computing Basics for CSB & IT Students

The Department of Information Technology, MGIT, successfully conducted a One-Day Workshop on Quantum Computing Basics exclusively for 2nd and 3rd year students of Computer Science & Business Systems (CSB) and Information Technology (IT) on 21st April 2025.

Introduction

The workshop provided an in-depth introduction to the fundamentals of quantum computing, focusing on key concepts, mathematical notations, and real-world applications. Participants gained valuable hands-on experience using Qiskit, IBM’s quantum development environment.

Topics Covered

  • Qubit Notation: Introduction to Dirac notation (ket & bra) for representing quantum states.

    • Ket notation: |ψ⟩ = α|0⟩ + β|1⟩ (with complex coefficients α and β)

    • Bra notation: ⟨ψ| = α*⟨0| + β*⟨1| (complex conjugates)

  • Quantum Mechanical Properties:

    • Superposition: Qubits can exist in multiple states simultaneously.

    • Entanglement: Correlation between qubits enabling quantum information processing.

  • Quantum Gates:

    • Pauli-X (bit flip), Pauli-Y, Pauli-Z (phase flip), Hadamard (creates superposition)

  • Python Code with Qiskit: Students implemented quantum circuits, applied quantum gates, and measured qubit states using Qiskit’s Python SDK.

Hands-on Experience

Participants actively engaged in coding exercises, building quantum algorithms, and exploring quantum phenomena using Qiskit. This hands-on approach strengthened their understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of quantum computing.

Applications of Quantum Computing

  • Cryptography: Exploring the impact of quantum computing on encryption and security.

  • Optimization: Solving complex problems efficiently.

  • Simulation: Modeling quantum systems and phenomena.

The workshop offered a comprehensive foundation in quantum computing and inspired students to pursue further learning and research in this emerging field. The Department of IT congratulates all participants for their enthusiastic involvement.
