Expert Lecture on National GIS Day – Department of Civil Engineering

News Date : 19 Nov 2025     News Report

The Department of Civil Engineering, MGIT, observed National GIS Day by organizing an expert lecture on 19th November 2025. The session was delivered by Dr. P. Sridhar, Senior Faculty, Engineering Staff College of India (ESCI), Hyderabad.

The expert talk focused on the significance of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and how they play an essential role in day-to-day decision-making. Dr. Sridhar explained how GIS integrates spatial data with analytical tools to visualize patterns, relationships, and trends, enabling smarter planning and efficient management across sectors.

He highlighted real-world applications such as:

  • Navigation and Mobility: Tools like Google Maps use GIS to provide real-time directions, traffic conditions, and optimal travel routes.
  • Urban and Utility Planning: GIS supports efficient design and management of water supply networks, electricity distribution, waste collection routes, and emergency response systems, ensuring timely and effective service delivery.
  • Weather Forecasting: GIS-based models enable accurate predictions of rainfall, temperature variations, and extreme weather events, helping communities plan travel, agricultural operations, and outdoor activities.

The lecture provided valuable insights into the growing importance of GIS in engineering, governance, infrastructure development, and everyday life. Students gained a deeper understanding of how spatial technologies shape modern decision-making and contribute to sustainable development.
