MGIT EEE Conducts One-Day Training Program on Digital Twin-Based Condition Monitoring of Distribution Transformers

News Date : 22 Sep 2026     News Report

Date: Hyderabad, 22 September 2026

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Technology (MGIT), Hyderabad, successfully conducted a One-Day Training Program on “Digital Twin-Based Online Condition Monitoring and Health Assessment of Distribution Transformers” on 22 September 2026.

The program was delivered by Dr. B. Koti Reddy, Technical Advisor (Energy & Emission Management), IIT Hyderabad, and Scientific Officer (Rtd.), Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. Drawing on decades of experience in energy systems, Dr. Koti Reddy explained how Digital Twin technology is changing the way utilities monitor, assess, and maintain critical power distribution assets.

Distribution transformers are among the most vital and expensive components of the power grid, and unexpected failures can cause costly outages. The session showed participants how a virtual replica of a physical transformer, continuously fed with real-time sensor data, can help engineers detect faults early, estimate remaining life, and plan maintenance before breakdowns occur.

Key Topics Covered

Topic Focus
Digital Twin Concepts Building virtual models that mirror the real-time state of physical assets
Online Sensing Sensors and measurement techniques for continuous transformer monitoring
IoT/Cloud Connectivity Transmitting, storing, and processing field data through IoT and cloud platforms
Transformer Health Index Quantifying overall transformer condition from multiple parameters
Predictive Analytics Using data-driven models to anticipate faults and failures
Condition-Based Maintenance Shifting from time-based to need-based maintenance strategies

Students and faculty members took an active part throughout the program, engaging with the speaker on practical applications and industry challenges in transformer asset management.

The Department of EEE thanked Dr. B. Koti Reddy for sharing his expertise and practical insights, and appreciated the support of Principal Dr. G. ChandraMohan Reddy, the Management, faculty members, and students in making the program an enriching learning experience.
